This novel is set in Brownsville, a decaying yet stubbornly vital neighborhood of old two-story homes and crumbling tenements. It is the Depression, that era of murdered hopes and betrayed promises, and the action takes place on a single breathless day in July, 1944. Albert is an undersized twelve-year-old, his dad is a doctor, who fears he will fall from sanity, a total loss of confidence. The theme of this book is the search for courage, the art of survival under stress. Albert struggles to overcome his cowardice, and Dr. Abrams must summon up the strength to resume his daily battle against disease, death, stupidity, and ingratitude. His two most important weapons are healing warmth of unselfish love, and the sensible application of the intellect.
