The Mendelssohn family are the descendants of the German Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, a significant figure in the Age of Enlightenment in Germany. Felix Mendelssohn was his grandson, and Fanny Mendelssohn, also a composer, his granddaughter. Wikipedia provides a very interesting family tree and I'm assuming that this collection of Felix Mendelssohn's letters were edited by his brothers, Paul a chemist, and Carl a historian...
