About This Item

Las Vegas, New Mexico: New Mexico Stock Grower, 1885., 1885. First edition. First edition. Full calf with foldover flap and the name J. H. Holmes is imprinted on the front cover, 92 pp., illustrated, advertisements. Pages 4-6 lists members, pp. 7-13 by-laws, pp. 14-48 illustrated cattle with brands and owners and their range, pp. 49-57 are extra pages with cattle illustration without brands (to be filled in), p. 49 is so used, pp. 58-64 is an index of brands, pp. 65-92 are full-page advertisements. Laid-in is a cattle tally of the 1880's. Members are mainly from San Marcial, Georgetown, Alma, Socorro, Albuquerque, but also from Laguna, Grafton, Curchillo,, Fort Wingate, San Antonio, Las Palomas, Belen, Santa Fe, Chavez, Blue Water, Engle, Chilili, Fort Craig, and Lake Valley, all in New Mexico. And one each from Springville, Arizona, Weatherford and Colorado City, Texas, and one from Los Angeles, California. A fine copy and extremely rare. Not in Adams' Herd. Perhaps the earliest of New Mexico Brand Books. Accompanying this brand book is a one-page registration in Socorro County, New Mexico of the official cattle brand and ear marks of Jonathan H. Holmes and Charles H. Gifford, dated Nov. 24, 1885. The registration bears a drawing of the brand and ear marks, the signature of the clerk and recorder of the county, plus the raised seal. The brand is a curious one of a whale. Were the owners possibly from an east coast whaling town? Both the brand book and the registration could be considered rare to exceedingly rare.
