About This Item

Sydney: Tyrrell's Galleries, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Sydney, Tyrrell's Galleries, 1930. Octavo, 30 pages with 10 tipped-in bookplates. Quarter cloth and papered boards, with a paper title-label on the front cover; all edges uncut; a fine copy with the original unlettered opaque textured dustwrapper (now with minor restoration). The colophon, signed by Barnett, states that the book is 'Reprinted from the 1929 Year Book of the American Society of Bookplate Collectors and Designers'. In fact, the original printing was unillustrated. In the Book Collectors' Society of Australia 2009 publication on Barnett, the bibliography by Mark Ferson lists this item as Barnett's first separate publication on the bookplate. However, Ferson does not record a separately-paginated reprint of the ASBCD article, an inscribed and signed copy of which we have handled, which presumably precedes this Tyrrell edition. Ferson notes a signed and numbered edition limited to 50 copies, as well as this unlimited edition, but does not record that there are two issues of the latter. The superior form is as described here; the standard form is in wrappers, unsigned.

This copy comes from the collection of Edward Edgar Pescott (1872-1954), horticulturalist, naturalist, author and book-collector; his wattle-design bookplate is tipped in on the half-title. The page facing it is inscribed [by R.H. Croll] to 'E.E. Pescott with the good wishes of the friends gathered to wish him and Mrs Pescott bon voyage. Melbourne 9th March 1939'. The bookplate of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria is tipped in on the same page. Tipped in on the front free endpaper is the 'Mutual Store' menu for the farewell dinner, signed by 17 guests, including Pescott, Croll, Charles Barrett, Crosbie Morrison, and Charles French. An autograph letter signed by Barnett, relating to the occasion, is also tipped in.
