The Book Of The Thousand Nights And One Night, E. Powys Mathers, The Casanova Society, London, 1923. Rendered From the literal and complete version of Dr J. C. Mardrus; and collated with other sources By E. Powys Mathers. Limited Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. A complete sixteen volume set, number 542 of a limited edition of 750, privately printed for subscribers of the Casanova Society. Bound in half tan, half dark pebbled grain leather. Gilt spine titles; gilt top edge, fore and lower edge untrimmed. Printed on antique paper with designed water mark (title in circular text with figure in the center). Title page with red scrolled border. Each of the 16 volumes have a beautiful colored frontis illustrating different stories and protected by a tissue guard. Internally these volumes are in near mint condition with the very occasional light and tiny smudge mark outside of text block and some discoloration to blank endpapers; tissue guard on Volume 9 has closed tear. Boards have light rubbing and occasional scratches with a small piece of leather missing to spine head in Volume 1 and light soiling to boards of Volume 12 and 14. Edward Powys Mathers' translation has been called 'racy', 'elegant', 'a masterpiece' 'beautiful' 'poetic' and 'highly readable'.
