About This Item
Harmondsworth [etc.]: King Penguin, 1949. First Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Good+/Lacking. 37 p., 64 p. plates. ; 19 cm. 12mo. Hardcover. Publisher's original decorated paper over boards. Book Condition: Good+, primarily due to completely perished spine, otherwise in lovely condition. From the library of Lawrence Ratzkin, with the careful calligraphic rendering of his name on the ffep by him, an indication of a book he most certainly acquired in his student days (we had the privilege of purchasing Mr. Ratzkin's library after his death over a decade ago). To appreciate the significance of this book owned by this artist it helps to know that Lawrence Ratzkin headed his own commercial studio for over 30 years producing literally hundreds of dust jackets almost all them of strongly font or text based, that is, utilizing the graphic qualities of type to tell stories of the books within in highly impactful ways. Kind of like if you came across a book on color theory with Josef Alber's name in it...or some such. A great association of what must have been a significant influence on an important commercial artist's formative years.
