About This Item

New York: de Vinne Press, 1893. D. B. Updike. Large paper copy of the Book of Common Prayer printed in black and red on American hand-made paper at the de Vinne Press for the Committee. D. B. Updike designed the plan of symbolism and method of decoration of the total edition, of which the complementary and subscription copies have foliated borders. Laid in is a notice from the Sub-Commmittee on Printing describing the required distribution of the various copies of the book and Updike's explanation of the inspiration for the design of the decorated copies. The official copies are printed with plain margins, and the complimentary and subscription copies have the foliated borders designed by Updike. According to Updike, while the decoration of such a book is inspired by the example of Medieval manuscripts, the use of modern typefaces obviates the elaborate designs of those volumes. Instead, he has devised a series of different margin designs to be used for the various types of pages contained in the Book which is in keeping with the spirit of a modern edition of the Book. Preliminary plant studies were done by William Wells Bosworth, border and cover designs were developed by Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue, and the final drawings for reproduction were made by Joseph Eliot Hill. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Vellum paper binding decorated elaborately with design in gold, closed with two brass clasps. (xxviii, 566, 2) pages. Approximately 11 x 14 1/2 inches. Condition is good, with a sound binding. The vellum paper is scratched, worn and rubbed at head and tail, and the corners are bumped and worn. The front joint is starting near the top. The text block is in fine condition. Bookplate.

Synopsis

This exquisite Deluxe Edition of the Anglican prayer book and literary masterpiece commemorates the 350th anniversary of the 1662 edition intimately familiar to our most enduring writers (Austen, Swift, the Brontës). It features a new introduction by The New Yorker ’s book critic, James Wood, discussing how it has influenced the English language and literature. As essential to the canon as the Bible and the plays of Shakespeare, The Book of Common Prayer has been in daily use for centuries. Originally produced for the Church of England in the sixteenth century by Thomas Cranmer, who was burned at the stake upon the accession to the throne of the ardently Catholic Queen Mary, it contains the entire liturgy as first presented in English—as well as some of the oldest phrases to be used by modern English speakers. Here are the daily prayers, scripture readings, psalm recitals, and the services marking such religious milestones as baptism, confirmation, and marriage (“to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, to till death do us part”), all from the 1662 edition, whose words live on to this day sin figures of speech, ceremonial vows and benedictions, and in the work of some of the greatest writers in English literature.
