About This Item

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1985. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. (Spiral In Association With Hodder and Stoughton 1985). First UK Edition in First Issue D/W. Pushing/bumping at the base of the spine (caused in all likelihood by the weight of the book) otherwise a near fine copy in like D/W with a touch of creasing at the head of the spine but with no fading. The D/W is NOT price-clipped. Complete with the scarce BOOKER Shortlist Promotional wrap-around band. The Band has at some stage in the life of this book been folded and laid inside the book as it has a couple of creases. The uncommon true first printing of the first UK first edition is identified by three first issue points: a) The book was printed in Singapore (noted on the copyright page); b) The book is slightly larger and heavier than the second printing; and c) the D/W makes no reference to the Booker Prize. A nice copy of the Winner of the Booker Prize. Rare with the wrap-around band.

Synopsis

Keri Hulme is a New Zealand writer, best known for her Man Booker prize-wining novel, The Bone People. The story is set on the harsh South Island beaches of New Zealand and recounts the stories and lives of three disparate and emotionally damaged people of mixed European and Maori heritage. Kerewin Holmes is a painter and a loner, convinced that "to care for anything is to invite disaster." Her isolation is disrupted one day when a six-year-old mute boy, Simon, breaks into her house. The sole survivor of a mysterious shipwreck, Simon has been adopted by a widowed Maori factory worker, Joe Gillayley, who is both tender and monstrously brutal toward the child. The novel uses journal entries, poems, dreams and narration to tell this raw, complicated story and to reveal each character’s motivations and desire to connect. Through shifting points of view, Hulme weaves together an unparralled story of vitality and glaring isolation.
