About This Item
In good condition - ex-library - has markings from use - due to differing weights in books, postage maybe adjusted at checkout.
Buzz Kennedy has been a newspaper columnist and media commentator - and a household name - for fifty years. Born in outback Western Australia, he grew up in isolation and suffered both the death of his mother at an early age and the hardships brought on by the Great Depression. Some years at boarding school introduced him to learning and a love for words. Then followed service in the AIF in World War II, after which he turned to journalism.
For many years he wrote the front-page 'Town Talk' column for the Daily Telegraph. He worked in radio (both commercial and ABC), in television from its earliest days ('What's My Line?') till recent times ('Good Morning Australia'), and was literary editor, leader writer and columnist, amongst other things, for The Australian. He also served as Special Assistant to Prime Minister Robert Menzies and as Press Secretary to the Queen Mother and Princess Alexandra.
In It Was Bloody Marvellous!, Buzz Kennedy has written a lively, largely anecdotal memoir that covers all aspects of this life and career. Through its pages stroll - and sometimes stalk - characters both great and not so great, amongst them journalists, teachers, socialites and social aspirants, media magnates, politicians and various members of the Royal Family. You can read why Menzies chose not to retire early, about Frank Packer's legendary quirks and strengths - and his attitude to his two sons - or the time someone offered the Queen a knitted tiara!
As an unabashed commentator to this day, he tells of his love for his native country, and his dissatisfactions, and gives views on an Australian Republic that may surprise some readers.
