Though sometimes classed as an "outsider" artist for his use of his own acute psychiatric crises as subject matter and his incorporation of folk-art techniques, Hallmann was also a well-established art world insider: trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dusseldorf and the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg, he would also go on to teach at the University of California San Francisco and the Braunschweig University of Art.
