Adam & Charles Black, London, 1961. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/Good. Illustrator: Various. Volumes 1 - 4: – have numerous black and white and coloured illustrations along with maps. Pink coloured boards with black coloured illustrations with black and white coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper same illustrations and colouration as for the underlying boards. Volumes 5 - 8: – have numerous black and white and coloured illustrations along with maps. Blue coloured background to the boards with black coloured illustrations. Black and white coloured titles to the front panel and black coloured titles to the backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper same illustrations and colouration as for the underlying boards. Volumes 9 - : – again have numerous colour and black-and-white illustrations along with some maps. Yellow and green coloured backgrounds with black coloured illustrations with black and white coloured titles to the front panel and black coloured titles to the backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper same illustrations and colouration as for the underlying boards. Entries are presented in alphabetical order. Volume 1 contains entries from Abacus to Ballet; Volume 2: Balloons to Camera; Volume 3: Canada to Crusades; Volume 4: Crusoe—Farming; Volume 5: Faust—Harvey; Volume 6: Hastings—Lagoon; Volume 7: Lakes—Minstrel; Volume 8: Mint—Patrick; Volume 9: Paul—Religions; Volume 10: Rembrandt—Snails; Volume 11: Snakes—Tools; Volume 12: Toronto—Zuyder Zee. The saddle stapled paperback index is present; with purple colour decoration entitles to the front panel. All of the volumes show a little rubbing of the backstrip corners and book corners with some light age toning of both the textblock edges and pages. Original bookseller's rubberstamp to the lower left-hand corner of the free front end pages. Some offset tanning is also present to the end pages. Foxing to the top textblock edges of the majority of the volumes. The dustwrapper is of the 12 volumes a little chipped, rubbed and marked and there is varying degrees of insect nibbles present. Sunning of the backstrip and some staining is also noted. The index booklet is somewhat creased at the book corners and there is rubbing of the edges and of the panels. The three staples that hold the book together are somewhat rusted and age toning of the textblock edges and pages has also occurred. Size: 4to 9¾" - 12" tall. 12-volume set (complete).
