From the jacket blurb: "Black Hawk and his war of 1832 foreshadowed all the later Indian wars of the west and were the start of an ongoing series of Indian-white conflicts that culminated at Little Big Horn with Custer's "last stand." Black Hawk was the first to attempt to form an Indian confederacy of the Midwest tribes, as Pontiac had attempted such a union in the Detroit area in 1763 and as Tecumseh had tried in 1811. That such past efforts had failed did not keep Black Hawk from trying to withstand the steady encroachment of the whites into territory that had been the Indians' for hundreds of years.
