About This Item

Faber, 1998. 1st edition. Hardcover. Fine in fine dustjacket. This prizewinning collection of 88 poems, all but two addressed to the author's former wife, Sylvia Plath, were written over a 25-year period following her suicide in 1963. They examine their life together and Hughes's responses to her death, but none of them directly deals with the events of the few days just before Plath killed herself. Accompanying the book is a xerox copy of The New Statesman article of 11th October 2010 in which Melvyn Bragg, a friend of both, published Hughes's poem 'Last Letter', which sheds light on the last weekend of Plath's life, but which Hughes decided not to include in Birthday Letters. The poem can easily be found online, but this was its first appearance in print. Hughes's motive in writing it, his recollection of events - and the quality of the poem - have divided the experts, but it is a fascinating coda to Birthday Letters. This collection won the 1999 British Book of the Year.

Synopsis

Birthday Letters, published in 1998, is a collection of poetry by English poet and children's writer Ted Hughes. Released only months before Hughes's death, the collection won multiple prestigious literary awards. This collection of eighty-eight poems is widely considered to be Hughes's most explicit response to the suicide of his estranged wife Sylvia Plath in 1963, and to their widely discussed, politicized and "explosive" marriage.
