NY: Wiley & Putnam. Good with no dust jacket; Pages foxed, water-stained and rippled.. 1844. First Edition. Hardcover. Rebacked dark red leather ruled boards with marbled endpapers. Gilt-stamped turn-ins. Top edges gilt. xxi, errata page, engraved plate depicting bird anatomy on eagle and duck, 1-397 pp. Sabin 27498. Three avian-themed bookplates from three separate owners, including a unique hand-painted watercolor of a Maryland Yellow-Throat on the front pastedown bookplate of horticulturist and avid ornithologist John Lewis Childs. Childs also started America's first seed catalog business from his base in Floral Park, New York. Giraud was an avid sportsman and naturalist, and collected thousands of bird skins and taxidermied bird specimens, most of which were donated to Vassar College when it maintained a large natural history museum. Describes appearance, habitat, breeding, and other aspects of 286 species that once inhabited- if only briefly during migration- the shores of New York's Long Island. Includes several extinct species, like the Labrador Duck and the Passenger Pigeon, as well as numerous marine and other kinds of bird species that haven't been seen in on Long Island in decades, if not centuries, like the Puffin and the White Ibis. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .
