Tissue guarded albumen frontispiece of the Long Eared Owl, mounted on card. In all four hand coloured albumen prints of birds mounted on card and the first book to contain photographs of birds. In this case the birds were stuffed and mounted specimens, camera lenses being unable to capture birds in flight. Pub's green pebble grained cloth, gilt bird vignette to front board and spine, gilt titles to spine, unmarked bright chocolate endpapers. Most of the gatherings are unopened to the top edge. The covers and spine in near fine condition, light push to spine ends, one small crease to cloth near base of spine. Hinge tender adjacent to one of the card mounts. Some very occasional, faint foxing to some pages. All the prints in bright, vivid condition.

With Gerson's pencilled signature to lower right hand side of backing board, and the initials FBIPP (Fellow of the British Institute of Professional Photographers). To rear, Gerson's stamp. No limitation mentioned. The backing measures 36x34.5cm and the visible image is 19.8x18.2cm. Taken by Gerson in 1957. The National Portrait Gallery owns a copy. Gerson made his reputation as a portrait photographer of literary figures, and his images count among some of the most compelling of the genre. Mounted on matte board with matte frame. The frame is not entirely attached to the backing.

Only occasional minor foxing, o/w. contents fine. Original green cloth boards, spine professionally relaid, with gilt bird motif on front cover and spine, all in nr. fine condition. A very pleasing copy. Captain Clark Kennedy published this book whilst at Eton. The first bird book to be illustrated using photographs. William Edwin Glegg was a dedicated and well respected ornithologist. He was the author of �A History of the Birds of Essex� (1929), �A History of the Birds of Middlesex� (1935) and a good number of papers for the Essex Naturalist.

Gilt title on spine and bird illustration on front cover and spine are clear and bright with light rubbing. Binding is tight and square, although the inside hinge is beginning to crack.
