Edited and researched by Carl Schlesinger; introduction by Elizabeth Harris; texts by Wolfgang Kummer and Stephen O. Saxe. xviii + 125 pages; 35 b&w illustrations + a pocket tipped-in to the rear paste down containing a facsimile reprint of the first Linotype printing in the New York Tribune; 6.75 x 10 inches. From the Oak Knoll Series on the History of the Book, this edition features added historical notes based on recent findings as well as numerous contemporary articles on the Linotype and its installation. Ottmar Mergenthaler invented the Linotype machine which made possible cheaper and larger newspapers and books. As he lay dying of tuberculosis in 1898, he dictated his life's story, which is published here for the first time exactly as recorded.

Text block has a few small spots of soiling. Boards are clean, bright and unmarked; corners and ends of spine bumped. Binding is tight and square. Dust jacket has light rubbing to front cover and corners. Blue paper-covered slipcase shows light to moderate soiling particuarly to rear board; rubbing to front board.
