London: J. Davis for R. Faulder, 1786. Hardcover. VG (Light shelfwear to boards. Expected age toning to pages. Text and illustrations are otherwise very clean and clear. Bindings are tight. A very nice copy of a rare set.). Complete set of 2 volumes bound as 4, with Volume 1 being in two parts and Volume 2 being in two parts. All four volumes are bound in 3/4 blue leather with blue cloth boards, five raised bands on spines with gilt tooling and lettering, all top edge gilt with blue and white marble end papers, deckled edges. Volume 1, Part 1, Part 2 and Volume 2, Part 1 have a mounted list of names inside front cover; Volume 1, Part 1 has two frontispieces, 174 pp with many illustrations, several mounted on thick cardstock. Volume 1, Part 2 is a continuation of Part 1 starting with page 175 and ending at page 368, illustrated throughout with several in the rear being fold-out. Bound in att the end of this volume, is directions to the binder. Volume 2, Part 1 has an engraved frontispiece of Adam and Eve signed "Raphael Santio da Urbino inv." with caption reading: "Done from a scarce print engraved by Marco Antonio Raimondi the same size as the Original". Pagination is 1-228 with illustrations throughout, several mounted on thick cardstock. Volume 2, Part 2 has a bw portrait frontispiece titled, "Palamedes Palamedessen" and is continued from Part 1 starting with page 229 through 458, illustrated throughout with many mounted illustrations. Joseph Strutt's dictionary of engravers. This rare set is "extra illustrated with engravings, original drawings, and autographs"- from spine of all four volumes. This set is from the library of Mortimer L. Schiff, American banker and Boy Scouts of America leader. Volume 1, Part 1 has a label bearing his name on the front end paper. Many of the woodcuts are printed in color. Some of the metal-cut plates are sepia tinted. Corrections and Additions for volumes are on page 455-458 of Volume 2, Part 2.
