Bates claims he served in the Ninth Ohio Cavalry, and after his capture was imprisoned by the Confederacy in seven different jails, including Macon, Danville, and Andersonville. After his escape from Andersonville in 1864, he was supposedly taken to the White House, where he met Lincoln. Bates was later awarded seven medals (an illustration is provided), one for every prison in which he was kept. "Bad fiction masquerading as fact" - Nevins. Read it and decide for yourself.
