New York: Howell, Soskin, Publishers, 1944. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. Oatmeal cloth boards, red lettering. Top edge pink. Illustrated endpapers. Bottom corners bumped. Small ex libris to front endpaper: 'Ex Libris/ Sanford Yates'. Else, pleasingly clean and tight. In the original dust jacket: creasing to edges, a few closed tears, nick to bottom corner of rear panel. A smart copy. Near fine/ very good. Hayes wrote for both post-war Italian and Hollywood cinemas, including Vittorio De Sica's The Bicycle Thieves (1948) and Nicholas Ray's The Lusty Men (1952). Tobias is perhaps best known for her New Yorker covers (1939 and 1942).

These are poems with a punch--"The Slaughterhouse", in particular, will stick with me for quite some time.
