About This Item

Faber & Faber, London - first edition 1992 Hardcover, 9½" x 6¼", with dust jacket Ours is an ex-library copy in transparent protective covering, with usual stamps, stickers, barcode etc. Page edges beginning to discolour. VERY GOOD book in VERY GOOD unclipped dust jacket Black cloth-bound boards with white title to spine, map frontispiece (Northern Ireland), 14 b&w photographs, Chronology 1969-89, Appendix, and Index. Explores the security forces' covert operations in Northern Ireland from the mid-seventies, when they were stepped-up, to the Loughgall shooting in 1987, in which eight Provisionals were killed - the biggest and most successful ambush of republican terrorists. Drawing on interviews with people at the heart of intelligence and special operations in Ulster, the book examines the roles of the Army, the police, Special Branch, MI5 and MI6, and assesses the 'shoot to kill' allegations, and other aspects in the struggle against a sophisticated terrorist organisation.
