1890 BEAUTIFUL Gustave Dore Bible Gallery Illustrated ART FOLIO Scenes Leather

Gustave Dore first began publishing Bible illustrations in 1865 in France, but because of their immense popularity, they would see reissues for decades and all over the western world. Most of these large, multi-volume Bibles, that contained nearly 250 engravings, were too heavy and expensive for the common buyer, so smaller products were published that featured only illustrations and no Bible text. These became the 'Dore Bible Gallery' editions.

Dore's Bible illustrations had a direct effect on early 20th-century biblical based films, drawing influence and costume design from Dore's portrayal of Bible characters. This late 19th-century Cassell edition features a unique frontispiece portrait of Doré with a memoir of Dore and descriptive letter-press by Talbot Chambers.

A scarce printing of William Paley's famous Christian apologetics work, 'Natural Theology'. A scientific and philosophical treatise, this title is commonly referenced amongst scholars when discussing the history and development of the modern understanding of scientific evolution. Significantly influenced by naturalist John Ray's work, Paley further developed Ray's ideas by proposing that the oft-observed complex adaptations seen in plants and animals were evidence of benevolent divine design. Rare original poetry book with cloth covered boards, copyright 1880 by J. W. Shoemaker & Co. This edition published in 1906 by the Penn Publishing company, Philadelphia. From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns. Light rubbing and bumps to outside spine edges. Back cover and interior cloth covered board has a stain at top. Original owner's name and address from 1908, but no other writing or marks. First 2 pages have a stain at top, but text of 192 pages of poetry and recitations is totally clean with light tanning of pages.
