Statements of Christian religious philosophy by the author of THE SONG OF BERNADETTE. Contains a foreword and four sections: 1) Of Man's True Happiness; 2) Realism and Inwardness; 3) Can We Live Without Faith in God?; 4) Theologoumena. Werfel notes that while touring Germany at a time when Hitler and National Socialism were struggling for power, he spoke before a student club in Insterburg. He proclaimed his conviction that humanity could not live without faith in God. Amid the howling and booing of the audience, and with the derisive protection of the authorities, he was forced to leave the auditorium. Bound in the original rust-colored cloth, decorated in gold.
