MP3 Audio CD. Basil, or, Honesty and Industry Dominick's Trials: An Irish Story (1870) is not as well known as O'Brien's 1878 novel, Light and Shade, a tale of the Fenian rising of 1867. The material she had gathered from Fenian leaders, and contains a protest against the conditions in Mountjoy Prison. A Tale of Venice, a drama, and Lyrics appeared in 1880. She also contributed to periodicals like The Nation, United Ireland, Limerick Field Club Journal, Dublin University Review and the Irish Monthly. From 1880 to 1881, O'Brien's interests and writing were centred on Irish political affairs, in which she shared her father's nationalist opinions. She contributed articles to the Nineteenth century on The Irish Poor Man (December 1880). In an article entitled Eighty Years (March 1881), she expressed her deep sympathy for the emigrants' anguish and her concern about the loss that emigration meant to Ireland. The title character Basil is a young boy who lives in deep poverty with his family. He is faced with numerous challenges and hardships that instead of hindering his faith in God, strengthen his belief. He needs to work to provide for his family and after some searching he finds employment with a woodcutter, a kindhearted, helpful and spiritual man who likes Basil and acts as a mentor for the boy, teaching him about life and about Christian values and virtues. Rare softcover book with no writing or marks published by Africa Evangelical Fellowship (formerly the S. A. G. M. mission) in good condition overall. Circa 1960. All pages and text clean and intact. The outside cover has some wear and discoloration, but interior of book has clean white pages. Very good binding. There is a foreword and an appendix at front and back with dates and data. Contents include 20 chapters about missionary calling and life in Africa, primarily Angola and Mozambique. Obtained in Africa in the 1980's from a British missionary with same mission that published this book.
