A good+ copy overall, covers are worn at all extremities, spine chipped at top edge, fore-corner tips worn through to boards; the hinges are cracked but secure, binding solid, with light foxing and moderate yellowing, paper still supple.

Edinburgh : Apollo Press, 1784. Leather. Good. 5" by 3". Unamed. Two volumes of The Poetical Works of the Reverend Dr. Edward Young bound as one volume. Bells' second edition. Edward Young (June 1681 – 5 April 1765) was an English poet, best remembered for Night-Thoughts. Originally part of a four volume set, this volume contains two volumes only bound into one. In a full calf leather binding with gilt borders to the boards. Externally, a trifle rubbed. Front board is held by cords only. Rear joint is starting but firm. Front hinge is tender. There is a bookplate and an ink inscription to the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean with some age-toning. Good

Book measures 160mm x 105mm approximately.
Fully bound in rich dark blue calf. Spine with "arts & crafts" inspired decoration in gilt with maroon title label. Boards, with double gilt fillet borders and elaborate gilt cornices plus further blind-tooled detail. Marbled end-papers and paste-downs. Engraving to first page of each "night" (chapter). All page edges in gilt.
CONDITION
The binding is quite firm. The boards retain a deep rich lustre but have some minor wear, chips and nicks and a few slight blemishes, with minor bumping to corners.
Internally, pages are generally clean throughout although with browning to the end-papers and paste-downs. Front paste-down is a little loose, and end-paper is detached but present. Neat ink inscription to front paste-down verso.
Overall, a neat and sound little volume of this famous work.

A lovely contemporary binding in full dark calf. Spine with five gilt-ruled raised bands with classical gilt motifs central to gilt-boxed compartments, and gilt-boxed maroon title label. Single gilt fillet border to both boards. Engraving to title page verso.
CONDITION
The binding is holding very firm. The binding retains a beautiful rich lustre. Boards and spine show a few marks, surface scratches and the odd dent and chip to edges, with a few mild darkening patches. Light wear to head and foot of spine with minor rubbing to hinges.
Internally the pages are generally clean although uniformly toned throughout and slightly heavier to rear quarter of book. Some marks, ragged edges and spots to the paste-downs and end-papers which also have marginal staining. A… Read More
