About This Item
Amstelaedami (Amsterdam): Georgium Gallet, 1702. [118], 316, [8], 88, [60], 246pp, [10]. Full later (c. 1815) morocco, raised bands, spine in six panels, authors and title in gilt to second panel, panels with triple fillet frame, covers with triple fillet border, gilt roll to edges and inner edges, shell patterned marbled endpapers. Ex-library copy with ink stamp to title, but no other signs. Rubbed to extremities, front joint split but holding well, internally some light browning throughout, occasional chipping to fore-edges, H6 with an old repair to fore-edge, Xx3 and 4 torn to bottom margin. With engraved frontispiece and six plates, title in red and black, red ruled throughout. Binding is by Antoine Chaumont, with his ticket to reverse of front marbled endpaper (at the Foin St. Jacques 18 address), described by Ramsden as "one of the most important of the 1800-1820 binders" (See Ramsden, French Bookbinders pp52/53).
