Brown cloth with lavish front cover gilt decoration, gilt top edges, 337 pp., 40 color and BW plates, with sundry other illus. that may be handtinted. American Impressionist and illustrator George Wharton Edwards (1859-1950) presents a "study of economic life and manners of the Belgians, the result of years of observation and sympathic appreciation of the remarkable qualities of the people of whom so little was known up to the outbreak of the war." (foreword) Enhanced by dozens of his own pieces of artwork. Edwards reports on Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent, Bruges, Tournai, Couillet, Liege, Mons, the Congo colony, and much more.
