Black-and-white photographic frontispiece, of Louisa May Alcott. Red speckled cloth covered boards with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. Illustrated dustwrapper with black and red coloured titles to the front panel and backstrip. Black-and-white illustration of author to the rear dustwrapper panel. Louisa May Alcott was renowned for her children's classics. "Little Women" series of books. What wasn't known, was, under the name of A. M. Barnard, she produced a series of "blood and thunder" short stories. For, as the front fold over panel blurb states, "... These stories were written because Louisa May Alcott needed money, because she was angry at the plight of women in a man's world, because she had a longing for the dramatic and know either way to vent it." Softening to the backstrip edges with rubbing to the backstrip corners. Creasing and rubbing to the top book corners with rubbing of the lower book edges. Browning of the textblock edges and pages. There is a piece missing to the top left-hand corner of the free front end paper  as if previous owner has torn out their name. There is a stain to the top edge of the textblock. Creasing to the dustwrapper edges and rubbing to the dustwrapper panels. This is the first UK edition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. [4], V - XXXIII, [7], 3-277, [7] pages,.
