Two centimetre tear on spine foot. Spine is slightly cocked. Library stamp, pen and nick on FEP. Hinge is visible on title page and between several pages. Contents are clear. AM. Hardcover. Black cloth, gilt titles on spine, endpaper maps, xi, 427 pp, footnotes, index. Black felt-tip mark resembling a remainder mark on bottom edge, but probably more recent. Cloth has spots where sizing has been lost, otherwise VG, paper browning and a few small spots on edges. DJ has large tears (to about 8 cm) with creasing on front panel, smaller chips and tears, corners of flaps trimmed; in Brodart archival cover. Hall spent many years in China in government posts, during which time Japan invaded Manchuria.
