Hiram Chittenden said that Doane made the first official report of the wonders of Yellowstone, and his fine descriptions have never been surpassed by any subsequent writer. Bonney/". This signature is quite scarce as Orrin Bonney passed away at an early age. Battle Drum & Geysers has three sections: One, the story of Lt. Doane's life; second, Doane's complete journal of the 1870 Yellowstone expedition with thorough annotations by the Bonneys, third, Doane's complete journal of the 1876-1877 Snake River expedition, also fully annotated. The work itself is a monumental 622 pages with an index and a bibliography. Volume has brown cloth covers with black lettering on the spine and some slight discoloration at the base of the spine. Dust jacket is protected in an archival quality Brodart cover and has a touch of of sun fade on the spine.
