About This Item

np: np, 1990. First Edition/Unique. Original Wraps/Envelop. Very Good+ to Near Fine. First Edition/Unique. Original Wraps/Envelop. The complete typescript and author's note for Anthony's 1990 young-adult sci-fi novel BALOOK, the publisher's copy sent by Anthony to his publisher Underwood-Miller who brought the novel out in 1990. Published the same year as Michael Crichton's JURASSIC PARK, Anthony's story also revolves around the genetic resurrection of an extinct dinosaur. A coming-of-age story of sorts comparing the maturation of the Baluchitherium "Balook" with that of his young friend Thor. Perhaps most noteworthy, however, for Anthony's "Author's Note" which closes the book (as well as the manuscript here). It recounts BALOOK's long and circuitous road to publication and remains one of Anthony most concentrated and sustained pieces on the science fiction genre, his working methods, and the writer's craft. It ends, appropriately enough, thusly: "I mentioned word processing programs. I had discovered one called Finalword that promised to be even better for me than my prior ones [...] But it was complex, and not perfectly adapted to me system or my Dvorak keyboard; it would be a monster to break in. So I decided to use [...] a short novel to break it in; once I have novelized a thing, I really understand it [...] The available novel was Balook." In other words, THIS typescript. Minor creasing to some pages; bit of toning overall; remnants of a smoky smell (both Anthony and his wife were smokers); two small corrections to the text, presumably by Anthony, else clean throughout. 8.5" x 11" typescript (computer word-processor-generated, almost certainly daisy wheel) on perforated printer paper. [2], 237, [1].
