About This Item
Oxford, England: Oxford University Press, 1973. Reprint Edition. Softcover. Good. Sturdy, still tightly bound softcover copy, moderate wear of covers, slight damp-staining to bottom of first few pages of text-block, but with neither underlining nor highlighting elsewhere, and faint stain not affecting text. Perfectly readable, usable copy. âRevised Editionâ of an original essay, published here as Occasional Papers on Technology, 9, T. K. Penniman and B.M. Blackwood, eds. Original publisherâs beige wrappers. 7 1/4â x 10.â 142 pp. Ninety-two black-and-white illustrations. Sixteen half-tone plates in the back. Covers have extensive smudges but they do not affect readability of the text. A solidly Good copy, but the interior is quite nice. Contents: âPreface,â âList of Illustrations,â âIntroduction,â âThe Bagpipe and Its Components,â âPrimitive Bagpipers and Hornpipes,â âBagpipes of Eastern Europe,â âThe Zampogna,â âBagpipes of Western Europe,â âMusette and Small-Pipe,â and âAddenda and Corrigenda (1973).â Protected in stiff Mylar. Thomas Penniman and Beatrice Blackwood were well known English ethnologists and ethnographers. Their warm Preface recounts that Anthony Baines was one of the founding members of the Galpin Society, and for several decades (born in 1812 and died in 1997) produced a wide variety of definitive works on the history of musical instruments, becoming in the process an âorganologist.â This work was published originally in 1960. Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
