Prompted by the Irish MP Arthur Dobbs, the Admiralty sent the Furnace and Discovery to Hudson Bay in 1741 in search of navigable passage to the Pacific. Collins, Greenville : Chart of Milford Haven, from Great Britain's Coasting Pilot, ca.1760. Copper engraved chart. Map size approx 560mm x 440mm. Wide margins, hand coloured, good impression on heavy paper, showing the Welsh coast at Milford Haven. Compass rose, rhumb lines, scale. Cartouche with cherub, dedicated to Sir Hugh Owen. Light water stain to top margin just touching printed area, otherwise a very good, bright and attractive chart.

Collins, Capt. Greenville: Netherlands, Untitled chart of Holland, Flanders and Eastern England. Ca 1753. Copper engraved chart. Size approx 600mm x 480mm. Good margins, hand coloured, good impression on heavy paper. Coast line of Flanders at Calles [Calais] to Der Scheling [Terschelling]of the West Frisian Islands and then Eastern England Margate in Kent to Burnham Flats in Norfolk. Much detail is given of the Thames estuary and Rotterdam soundings. Depth soundings and rhumb lines indicated. A compass rose is set at the centre of the Chart. Title cartouche "To the Honourable Sir john Ashby Kt. Admiral of the Blew/ This is most humbly dedicated and presented by Capt G Collins". Some age soiling to edges, one small tear, without loss and repaired to centre fold area. A scarce, attractive sea chart in good, bright condition suitable for display.

Tallis, John: South Australia. London. [ca.1851]. From the Montgomery Martin Illustrated Atlas. Map engraved by Rapkin. Size approx 360 x 260mm. Original steel engraved map with original outline hand colouring and decorative border. 5 vignettes include Australian Dog, Natives on a Catamaran and Adelaide. Single page unfolded map in excellent, clean condition. Associated text page of the Montgomery Martin Atlas included. A good Tallis Map.

Stark, Freya. Dust in the Lion's Paws. London, John Murray. 1961. Ist Edition. 8vo. Hardback, green coloured cloth, gilt titles to spine, gilt authors signature to front. Pp297 with black and white photographs within text and full page sketch map of the Middle East. Lacks dust wrapper. Laid on front pastedown is a card printed "With the Author's Compliments", also, armorial bookplate of Gerald de Gaury. There is some marginalia on pages 66,113, 117 in ink and on back endpaper in pencil, in the hand of de Gaury; commenting on various aspects of the text. Some light marks on the front cover and rust residue from a paperclip on the front free endpapers. Print is strong and binding is tight. Gerald de Gaury, friend of Freya Stark was an experienced traveller, photographer, Arabist and diplomat and perhaps his remarks reflect his view on the situation recorded in this Freya Stark autobiography.
