About This Item

Lisboa: Ed. Futura, 1973. First edition of this early collection of essays by the future Nobel Prize- winning author. Octavo, original wrappers, as issued. Inscribed and dated by Jose Saramago. The Portuguese writer Jose Saramago is the recipient of both the 1995 Camões Prize and 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature. Harold Bloom described Saramago as "the greatest living novelist" and considers him to be "a permanent part of the Western canon (Evans, 2002). Manual of Painting and Calligraphy is Saramago's first novel, and it "displays a masterly grasp of wordplay and other literary devices, and as the translator points out, it can also serve as a map to the political and social themes of Saramago's future novels" (The New York Times Book Review).
