New York: William Sloane Associates, 1947. Hardcover. 8vo, (22 cm), half red morocco with burgundy cloth, raised bands with six compartments, gilt spine, t.e.g, marbled endpapers. 315 pp., numerous b&w illus. First edition, first printing, inscribed by the author. Portions previously printed in Atlantic Monthly etc. This profusely illustrated title by editorial cartoonist and Pulitzer Prize winning Mauldin depicts life as a World War II veteran and includes commentary about the "red scare", Franco and Fascism, Zionism and more. Inscribed on the flyleaf "To John and Claire. Bill Maudlin." The recipients were Mauldin's friends John Evans, son of Mable Dodge Luhan of Taos, N. M. fame, and his wife Claire Spencer, author and ex-wife of Harrison Smith, publisher. CONDITION: Very good, light rubbing on covers, a few light white marks to lower portion of front cover, fore-edge lightly foxed, contents clean.
