Hong Kong fell to the Japanese in December 1941. Shortly afterwards Colonel L. T. Ride (father of the author) and a group of companions escaped from Shamshuipo prison camp and made their way to Free China. There, Colonel Ride suggested to military officials that an organization be set up to help prisoners of war, internees and escapees. The War Office approved and the British Army Aid Group (BAAG)was born. It soon became the chief source of military intelligence for the Allies fighting in Southern China. besides helping to liberate about 2000 people from Japanese captivity, it carried out the humanitarian work of smuggling into Hong Kong drugs, food and messages of hope. Edwin Ride has reconstructed this account from his fathers papers.
