Red cloth with blindstamped design of poppies and gilt-stamped titles on front boards. Color frontispiece and eight black and white plates by Walter Appleton Clark. A novel about Helena, who leaves a wretched life with her drunken husband (who killed their baby son) , to live with another man in another town. She ends up taking in a young boy, but when it is discovered that she is not married, the boy is taken away. The novel was the basis for the stage play and 1916 silent film starring Ethel Barrymore. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 357 pages .
