Canterbury, Kent, U.K.: January 25, 1868., 1868.. Very good. - Autograph note penned on a slip of paper, 3-7/8 inches high by 6-1/4 inches wide. The note is mounted on a slightly larger piece of card. It is signed vertically, across the text, "Henry Alford". One word is slightly smudged & there is minor rippling to the left edge caused in the mounting. Folded twice for mailing. Very good.

Alford writes that he is complying with a Miss Nicholson's request for his autograph to add to the collection she is making.

Henry Alford [1810-1871]. was an English churchman theologian, textual critic, scholar, poet, hymnodist and author. A precocious boy, he had written several Latin odes, a history of the Jews and a series of homiletic outlines before he was ten. In 1835 he began an eighteen-year tenure of the vicarage of Wymeswold in Leicestershire. In 1844 he moved to Quebec Street Chapel, London, where he had a large congregation. Lord Palmerston advanced him to the deanery of Canterbury in 1857 where he continued to pursue his usual energetic and diverse lifestyle until his death. His chief fame as a scholar and textual critic rests on his monumental eight-volume edition of "The New Testament in Greek" which he worked on for twenty years.
