Dickinson, Lisbon, Ohio, accepting the invitation he had extended from Starr Post 138, G.A.R., in Lisbon, Ohio, for her to visit on Memorial Day. Kate Brownlee Sherwood (1841-1914) was a poet and journalist, as well as the editor from 1883 of the Woman's Dept. of The National Tribune, a monthly publication for Civil War veterans and their families. She also helped to organize the Woman's Relief Corps to aid the Grand Army of the Republic the same year, was the first president of the Ohio Newspaper Women's Association in 1902, and supported women's suffrage. J. M. (John M.) Dickinson was born in Columbiana Co., Ohio, in 1836; served in the 84th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, during the Civil War; was admitted to the bar in 1864 and was an attorney in Lisbon, Ohio, through 1905; served as mayor of Lisbon 1869-1881; served in the Ohio Senate from Columbiana Co. 1882-1885; and was a justice of the peace in Lisbon… Read More

Il relit depuis six mois la lettre que l'écrivain Christian Maurel lui a écrite. "[Ce qu'il] relit aussi, plusieurs fois, et ce n'est pas fini, ce sont les Canaris", un livre qu'il trouve riche au-delà de sa beauté formelle et qui "a la densité du creux des mains, appliquée à la chair d'autrui". Il lui commande de publier ce qu'il a écrit d'autre que les Canaris car "la beauté est faite pour être donnée à voir, c'est vrai des livres aussi bien que des corps, et d'ailleurs que c'est charnel ce que tu écris." Avant de signer, il ajoute à l'encre "et je t'embrasse"..

Palahniuk returns signed books and informs his correspondent that in the furure the "address in Vacouver, Washington will be unreliable. I'm seldom there." He recommends St Helen's Bookstore for future signed books. "It's a small one-room bookstore and I stop there once a month... It's good to support small, independent bookstores." Palahniuk adds that he is glad to return the books. "It would bum-me-out to think they'd sat in the 'dead-letter' office, or -- like a ton of my mail -- got left in the rain... You wouldn't guess the sad, wet mountain of mail that gets hauled away from my old house in Portland." He ends with "I'll shut up now." Signed in ink. Fine condition.. Signed by Author. Unbound. Curzon, George Nathaniel, Marquess Curzon of Kedleston (1859–1925), politician, traveller, and viceroy of India. At the time of writing, he was Foreign Secretary. In January 1924, Curzon vacated the Foreign Office and he was able to devote much of 1924 to completing one of his finest books, a study of Calcutta and the viceroys which was posthumously published under the title British Government in India; the work mentioned in this letter.
Sir Evan Cotton

Typed and handwritten signed letter to "My dear Watson" dated 5th January 1934. 1pp. 20cm x 25cm. King's College Zoological Department headed watermarked notepaper. The advance copy of the book mentioned is Huxley's "Elements of Experimental Embryology" co-written with Gavin de Beer. "I have got a German refugee working here who is getting interesting results with Sabella". The German refugee was Fabius Gross (1906 – 1950) Hitler's Black Book entry: "Since 1934 – Researcher at King's College, London University. Speciality – genetics; experimental cytology; protozoology; experimental zoology." Gross and Huxley published 'Regeneration and reorganisation in Sabella' in 1935. The letter also mentions work with Alexander Wolsky and C. J. Bond.
