Samuel Loyd Jones [known as Lord Overstone after 1850] writes to the Lord Mayor of London, politely declining to join a committee unless the mere listing of his name would be helpful by signifying his approval of the project. "As an old man of business I am averse to undertake any office, especially one connected with the collection and administration of pecuniary funds, when I cannot give personal attention to the duties of it...."
