The author had died before the publication of his autobiography but left instructions to the trustees as to how he would like it to be presented. Herbert Spencer was a British philosopher and sociologist who was intellectually active during the Victorian period. He was known for his contributions to evolutionary theory and for applying it outside of biology, to the fields of philosophy, psychology, and within sociology. A very nice set bound in 3/4 brown morocco over marbled paper covered boards, raised bands, compartments lettered and decorated in gilt, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Joints rubbed, some fading to spines and along upper edge of volume two. A handsome set.
