New York: Wehman Bros, n.y.. 12mo. Stiff orange printed outer wrappers (wrapper title: "Indexed Street Map Greater New York") housing map that unfolds to 35½" X 26½". Very good/near fine. Outer wrapper (only) quite faintly soiled; map itself quite bright and lovely, showing practically no edge tears, with only a few miniscule separations along the original fold line intersections (expertly, archivally closed on verso, thus undetectable). Stunning copy of this undated but circa 1910-1914 era map showing in vibrant detail the Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens Boroughs in blue, red, green and yellow as bright as the day it was published. All "Subway Express Stations," "Subway Local Stations," "Elevated Stations," "Surface Lines" and "Steam Railroads" are boldly marked in red. Double-ruled red border with numbers running down two sides and the alphabet across the other two sides, allowing one to use the coordinates of the "Street Index" list printed on the verso to pinpoint any street. Price on outer wrapper noted as "25 Cents." The map itself prominently notes "Published & Copyrighted by A. Humitsch," although novelty and joke book publisher Wehman Bros. is ostensibly the publisher of record. Verso of the card stock wrapper depicts the covers of 18 of Wehman Bros. more typical productions, namely riddles, tricks, toasts and mainly off-color joke books aimed specifically at and sure to offend just about every ethnic group (African-American, Dutch, Hebrew and many Irish) and certain professions. A superb example of this outstanding street plan. Very scarce in this choice collector's condition.
