This book is about the California (1849) and Australian (1854) gold rushes and the interrelationship of the participants. With the California Gold Rush, the Australians were among the first '49ers and the exodus caused sever labor shortages in Australia. The large number of rowdy Australians in California caused tension and conflicts with the Americans and everyone else. By the time of the Australian Gold Rush, many of the 49ers had returned home and it was the Californians that rushed to the southern continent. Together the miners participated in a "Diggers Revolt" that led to many government reforms.
