About This Item
In good condition - has markings from use - due to differing weights in books, postage maybe adjusted at checkout.
The Australian War Memorial's art collection numbers many thousands of works - sketches, paintings and sculpture - which represent the output of war artists both official and unofficial during a span of more than eighty years. Begun by C.E.W. Bean after the First World War, the collection is now the most comprehensive in Australia and reveals a facet of Australian history and culture all too frequently overlooked.
Volume I surveys the artists and their war art from 1885 up to and including the Great War. Some of the most famous names in Australian painting are represented here in an entirely different light, including Tom Roberts, Arthur Streeton and other 'Heidelberg School' painters, as well as artists best known for their imposing First World War battle pictures, such as George Lambert and H. Septimus Power. In addition to major artists and art works depicting and recording primarily the First World War, there are many paintings and drawings of great beauty by artists less well known but of considerable talent.
