About This Item

McLoughlin Bros., nd (1870s) 1870. 1st Thus. Hardcover. VG. NAST, Thomas. 1st Thus. 23.2 x 27.2 cm blue cloth with pictorial pastedown to the front cover, black and gilt stamped decoration and titles to the front and spine and blind stamped decoration to the rear cover. Red stained edges, brown endpapers unpaginated (112) printed on one side of the page only with 24 full page colour lithographs. Six illustrating each tale. The six lithographs in Santa Clause and his Works are by Thomas Nast and are accompanied by 7 black and white illustrations within the text. The boards are very good with a little rubbing to the spine tips, where the cloth has a couple of tiny holes, and corners where the bottom two have been rubbed through. There is also some light marking to the image on the front cover. Internally it is clear that some restoration and repair has been carried out in the past. The text page entitled The Pony in Kindness to Animals has japanese paper repairs to tears to the fore and bottom edges and has obviously been reinserted at some point. However the pages of Santa Claus and his Works are in very good condition with only a little spotting and some ghosting from the images on to the page facing. All in all a lovely book with a scarce Santa Claus story and some striking Nast images Rainford & Parris Books welcomes enquiries, so please do not hesitate to ask if you require further images or have any questions. All books are packaged with great care.
