1980. Hardcover. Fine condition. Three elephant folio volumes produced by the USSR War Department [Ministerstvo oborony Sovetskogo Soyuza], with volumes on the Pacific (1974) [Tikhiy okean], the Atlantic (1977) [Atlanticheskogo i Indiyskogo okeanov] and the Arctic Ocean (1980) [Arkticheskiy sever led okeana]. The Arctic Ocean was a front line in the Cold War following the second world war due to its strategic location between the United States and the USSR. The Soviets established a program of drifting stations and research stations, (30 operated from 1958 to 1975) which collected data important today to further the understanding of climate change in the Arctic. The Russian Northern Fleet also operated nuclear vessels in the Arctic, dumping spent nuclear fuel there. Interesting volumes for the highly detailed data collected. Volumes measure 14 x 18 inches wide. Black gilt stamped cloth with gilt titles at spines. Cream dj with titles in blue at front covers and spines.
