About This Item

London: J Newbery , 1758. First edition. Disbound. Good Only. 4.5" by 3.5". None. A very scarce, first edition, first impression of this cartography work by John Gibson. Comprising of fifty two maps total. The very scarce first edition, first impression. With the errata to the index stating the error to the Africa map. Also with contemporary hand coloured. Many, if not most copies were not coloured. Engraved with a frontispiece, title page and fifty two maps. All of the maps have been drawn and engraved by Gibson and are beautifully hand-coloured. The work has been edited by Emanuel Bowen, the Geographer to his majesty. Bowen was a Welsh map engraver who was the mapmaker to both King George II of England and Louis XV of France. Bowen was regarded as producing some of the largest, most detailed maps of his era. John Gibson was an English cartographer, draughtsman and engraver. This is his best known work. He also worked for the Gentleman's Magazine, engraving many decorative maps. This pocket atlas is one of the most attractive atlases published in the eighteenth century. Collated, lacking the advertisement leaf as always. The final blank has been discarded. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, ' Anthony Fisher the Gift of Philip Mair'. Anthony Fisher's inscription to the title page. This first impression is extremely scarce. Disbound. With the boards present. Spine has suffered some loss. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper, and to the title page. Internally, maps are clean and bright. Binding is tender in places. Pages are generally bright. Small worm hole which penetrates the entire work, to the inner margin only. Not affecting any of the images. Light tidemark to the front endpaper, not affecting the rest of the work. Just the odd light spot. Good Only
