About This Item

London: William Kimber, 1963. Gold title on blue boards which are very clean and unmarked with no wear. Internally there is some light foxing to closed edges else very clean, tight and unmarked. A Very Good+ copy. Dustjacket is VG+ and is not price clipped. 27 outstanding illustrations. In 1959, after November gales had lashed the coasts of Devon, H.G. Hurrell, the naturalist whose home is on the fringe of Dartmoor, was called to the Yealm estuary where a stranded baby seal was at the point of death. It had been wounded in the storms, had refused all attempts to feed it, and had reached the final stages of weakness and exhaustion. The cub's plight seemed hopeless, but with Hurrell was a son who was a doctor and who decided to attempt artificial feeding along the lines of human medical techniques. How Hurell and his family nursed the baby female seal back to health is an outstanding animal rescue story, for this young Atlantic seal proved to be a creature of amazing intelligence, who came to understand a wide range of spoken words, and even eventually, unbelievable as it may seem, to read some of them.. B2D. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
