About This Item

London: Joseph Thomas, 1841. Signed binding by Zaehnsdorf. Single gilt fillet cover borders. Inner dentelles. Panelled spine lettered in gilt. Spine is darkened to brown, with some crackling of the leather.Top edge gilt. Mounted frontispiece portrait on India paper. This translation from the French by Joseph Thomas. Illustrations throughout the text and title-page vignette by Tony Johannot. Text block very clean with only occasional foxing, confined mostly to the periphery. Both joints rubbed. Small nick out of top front cover corner. Asmodeus was the "King of Demons", probably derived from Zoroastrianism. He apparently had a limp, one or two feet clawed or hooved. Le Sage portrayed him using two canes, thus the title, "Le Diable Boileux". Le Sage (1668-1747) was a French novelist and playwright during the Enlightenment Era. First edition of this novel in French was 1707. 401pp. . First English Edition, This Translation. Full Plum Morocco. Light edge and Corner Wear/No Jacket. Tall Octavo.
