Greene's father opened a water-cure sanitarium in Castile, New York in 1849. At that time, the water cure (or hydrotherapy ) was a popular treatment for a number of chronic diseases. It involved taking frequent baths and drinking lots of water, combined with outdoor exercise. She moved to Philadelphia and enrolled in the newly- opened Women’s Medical College of Pennsylvania, where she became their first student to receive a medical degree, in 1853. She continued her studies in Cleveland, where she graduated with honors from Cleveland Medical College (later Case Western Reserve) in 1856. Cordelia Greene was a respected member of the medical community. She often gave lectures on preventive medicine, and at one point chaired the Educational Committee of the Woman’s Medical Society of New York State .

Near fine. 8vo, 7.75 x 5.25 inches, publisher's decorated pale green cloth gilt, nearly fine bright tight copy in excellent condition. 233 pp., including glossary. Greene was a pioneering health provider who ran at least two sanitariums. This book is not only a conduct and etiquette guide but also a health and marital counselor and guide to sexual conduct, with chapters on marital relations, sterility and impotence, "perverted and diseased manhood and womanhood" which encourages abstention from mental & physical "self abuse," and the "mechanical irritation of the genesic organs," "physical disease as the source of erotic irratibility" as well as discussions of "accidental pregnancies" and abortion. Greene was also an ardent suffragist. Rare in the original edition; at the time of this listing ours is the only vintage copy for sale online.
