About This Item

New York: B. M. Whitlock, 1889. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Illustrated by H. A. Ogden. Large folio. Half leather, spine in 6 compartments, gilt; maroon colored pebbled cloth, gilt title on the upper board; all edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. With 44 full page chromolithographed illustrations of the uniforms of the United States Army from 1775 to 1888, accompanied by Nelson's text in letterpress. The lithographs are after water colors by H. A. Ogden. Prepared and executed by the Quartermaster General of the United States under authority of the Secretary of War. Lithographed by G. H. Buek & Co.

De Luxe edition, one of 1500 copies of which this is No. 51.

Reissued in 1959 and 1998, but the reissues are a pale reflection of the beauty of the original chromolithographs. Now rare complete with all 44 plates present, many copies having been disbound to have the plates framed.

We note some small repairs to the cloth boards, a bump on one edge, and two mended marginal tears on the title page else this is a near fine copy.
